Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard came away from the team's preseason finale with a head injury. However, the franchise isn't pressing the panic button just yet.
Howard is reportedly in concussion protocol, but is expected to be cleared soon, via Mark Kaboly of the Pat McAfee Show. While that doesn't put a concrete timeline on his return, the Steelers at least believe he won't be faced with an extended absence.
Even if he were, Pittsburgh has the depth to handle his loss after deciding to carry four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. Howard may not even technically be QB2. Still, the Steelers will be paying close attention to his recovery. They won't risk a setback, but they want him back on the field sooner rather than later.

The fact Pittsburgh held on to four QBs may come off as a shock. But each one fills a clear role. Aaron Rodgers is the undeniable starter while Mason Rudolph offers the most experience as a backup option. With Rodgers poised to retire after 2026, Howard and Drew Allar function as potential quarterbacks of the future.
The Steelers used a third-round pick on Allar in 2026 while Howard was a sixth-rounder in 2025. While Allar may have cost higher draft capital, keeping both QBs shows that the franchise remains high on both. Howard will get an opportunity to prove he can play a role in Pittsburgh's future.
But first, he must get back on the gridiron. Howard's latest update points to a quick recovery. But the Steelers will be cautious seeing as the quarterback was dealt a head injury.
