Charlie Smyth will be sticking with the New Orleans Saints
Charlie Smyth will remain a New Orleans Saints player and will take his place in the team's practice squad, after being waived just before the start of the new NFL season.
Saints had released former Down Gaelic footballer Smyth following a competitive training camp and a final pre-season game against the Dallas Cowboys.
He had gone into the training camp largely considered the favourite to retain his spot, but the Saints subsequently brought in several other options to challenge after he failed to fully impress in pre-season.
Smyth could have join another side NFL with a deadline of 5pm on Monday (31 August) for teams to sign released players.
However no other team picked him up and he will now return to the Saints practice squad.
Last season, Smyth led the Saints to four wins in his six starts which included a 47-yard game-winning field goal against NFC South rivals the Carolina Panthers.
