Gary O’Neil provides injury update on Ipswich Town striker ahead of Liverpool clash

Liverpool will be aiming to end their winless start to the 2026-27 Premier League season on Friday night when they travel to Ipswich Town.

Newcomers Ipswich Town have already provided plenty of entertainment, with their first two matches producing 10 goals. They beat Sunderland 2-1 before suffering a 5-2 defeat at Manchester United.

Attack might not be their best form of defence, but don’t expect the Tractor Boys to back down when Liverpool visit Portman Road.

Ghana international Abdul Fatawu has been one of O’Neil’s standout creative players, creating three chances and registering an assist. Julio Enciso has also provided an assist in both Premier League games.

New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola will want to tighten things up at the back after his side conceded four goals in their opening two games.

Liverpool drew 2-2 at Newcastle United before being held to the same scoreline by Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday.

Late goals to rescue points in both matches will offer some comfort to Iraola, who also watched his countryman Victor Munoz score his first goal for the club against Forest.

Ipswich manager Gary O’Neil is without Azor Matusiwa, Jack Taylor and Jaden Philogene-Bidace through injury, while he faces an anxious wait to discover the severity of the injury that forced striker Emersonn off in the 5-2 defeat at Manchester United.

O’Neil said: “We’re hopeful it’s not serious. It was like a landing and a jarring of the knee. It was a bit too painful for him to carry on.

“It was a blow, of course. But we’re hopeful that it’s not going to be anything too serious. I’m hoping that when we get in tomorrow and he’s checked, he’s feeling a bit better. Obviously it could be anything at this stage. But, initial signs, we’re hopeful.”

Andoni Iraola faces a lengthy injury list, with Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Joe Gomez, Federico Chiesa, Vitezslav Jaros, and Giovanni Leoni all ruled out.
