Former Michigan State star Joe Bachie is going to be sticking around the Mitten after all.
After spending training camp with the Detroit Lions, the team released the 28-year-old linebacker on Sunday as rosters were sliced down to 53 players. On Monday, though, the team announced he was being retained on the Lions' practice squad.
Bachie, who was an undrafted free agent coming out of MSU, has played in regular-season games with four other NFL clubs and split last season across stints with the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans.
Also on Monday, fellow MSU products Jack Velling and Jacoby Windmon landed deals on the practice squads of the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers, respectively.
Bachie played in 10 games for the Titans in 2025, totaling three tackles, after making five starts in five appearances for the Colts early in the season, logging 26 tackles. Bachie, who made his NFL debut with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020, has played in 66 NFL games over his six seasons. Most of his action came during his four-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2021-24.
A native of Brook Park, Ohio, Bachie was a two-time captain and three-year starter for Mark Dantonio's Spartans from 2016-19. Bachie was an All-Big Ten performer every year he was a starter, earning second-team honors as a sophomore, first-team recognition as a junior and a third-team nod as a senior in 2019. In all, Bachie played in 40 games as a Spartan, starting 34 of them.
