Aaron Donald has officially brought his retirement to an end, announcing his return to the Los Angeles Rams for the 2026 NFL season. With one of the greatest defensive players in league history rejoining an already loaded roster, expectations surrounding Los Angeles have reached unprecedented levels among fans, analysts, and oddsmakers.
Amid the growing hype, former NFL star Shannon Sharpe has revealed what he believes could be the blueprint for opposing teams hoping to slow down the Rams.

Donald’s decision to return to the NFL was heavily influenced by Rams head coach Sean McVay, who contacted the defensive legend during Los Angeles’ offseason pursuit of Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. With Donald now back in the fold, the Rams boast a terrifying defensive front that includes Garrett, Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, and Byron Young.
The Rams are equally dangerous on the offensive side of the football. With veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford leading an attack that also features Davante Adams, Puka Nacua, and Kyren Williams, Los Angeles immediately looks like one of the strongest contenders in the NFC.

On the Nightcap podcast, Sharpe shared just how frightening the Rams could become with Donald back on the field.
“Everybody’s worst nightmare became a reality today, and that is Aaron Donald,” Sharpe said. “He is indeed coming back. He agreed to a one-year $20 million deal with playoff incentives that could raise the total to $30 million.”
However, Sharpe did not simply praise the Rams. He also explained what he believes opponents must do if they want to have any realistic chance of defeating Los Angeles.
“Matthew Stafford, Puka (Nacua), Davante Adams, Kyren Williams, they’re loaded,” Sharpe added. “But to answer y’all questions, how do you do it? You run them out of it.
“They want to pin their ears back, Ocho, and come attack your quarterback. If you cannot run the ball on them, you cannot beat the Rams. You have got to make them catch.”
Donald retired in March 2024 after spending 10 seasons in the NFL, all with the Rams. During his remarkable career, he earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his first 10 seasons and was named a First-Team All-Pro in all but two of those campaigns.
Los Angeles is reportedly the only team entering the season with multiple players who have won multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards. Even before Donald announced his return, the Rams were already viewed as the favorites to win Super Bowl LXI, according to DraftKings.
Aaron Donald Admits Super Bowl Success Pulled Him Back
For Donald, returning to football was about more than simply adding another season to his legendary career. The opportunity to chase another Super Bowl title ultimately proved too difficult to resist.
“So I always knew, I was a guy that never wanted to play forever,” Donald said. “In my head I was like, I’m the Barry Sanders of the league. But I always said I was going to do eight years and be done.”
“I just happened to win a Super Bowl my eighth year. I’m like, man, this is destiny. But it’s kind of addictive, you can’t just win a Super Bowl and walk away. It’s like, you want to experience that again.”
“I had a long conversation with Sean, probably about two hours on the phone, late at night… He was on the West Coast, I was in Pittsburgh. And we just talked. I wasn’t fully done. I still wanted to experience that again. So I chose to come back for two more years.”
After spending more than two seasons away from football, Donald reportedly followed a structured conditioning program during the summer to prepare his body for the physical demands of an entire NFL season.
His return also has an impact beyond the Rams’ Super Bowl aspirations. By coming out of retirement, Donald’s eligibility timeline for the Pro Football Hall of Fame resets until he eventually retires from professional football for good.
