Liverpool are now ready to “open talks” with exciting midfielder Trey Nyoni over a contract extension at Anfield, according to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans.
The 19-year-old was arguably the Reds’ biggest positive during pre-season, standing out as one of their best players and being praised by Andoni Iraola:
“Trey is very good on the ball – very calm, he reads the situations well. We’re forcing him in the work without the ball, in the press, and he is absolutely doing very well. I think the timings of the jumps are very good. He is always confident on the ball so we encourage him. At the end, he is a midfielder who, I always say, you have to ask for the ball sometimes with pressure – and he doesn’t feel this pressure.”
On Monday, Nottingham Forest saw a £25m bid for Nyoni rejected by Liverpool, and as part of the update on X, Evans claimed that a new deal could now be on the horizon for the Reds star:
“LFC aren’t interested in selling Trey Nyoni and are expected to open talks over a new contract. He’s likely to have a much bigger role this season.”

Should Trey Nyoni start for Liverpool vs. Ipswich?
Thankfully, Liverpool haven’t even entertained the idea of selling Nyoni this summer, which would have been a bizarre decision that would have been met with great anger by the fans.
There are plenty who feel that the Englishman should even be named in the Reds’ starting XI away to Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Friday night, amid midfield issues for Iraola.
In fairness, none of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister or Dominik Szoboszlai are exactly pulling up trees in the middle of the park, and Nyoni would bring more balance as a natural No.6.
While the step up to being a genuinely reliable Premier League player is great, Nyoni showed enough during pre-season that he is capable of it, as well as in a good cameo at home to Nottingham Forest last weekend.
It would be a surprise if he starts at Portman Road, but if Liverpool’s midfield is again unconvincing, the calls for him to play more will only grow louder.
