Chelsea have sanctioned one of the most unusual transfers of the summer by allowing Tosin Adarabioyo to join Tottenham permanently, ending a 17-year wait for a senior player to move directly from Stamford Bridge to their London rivals.
Tosin’s departure developed rapidly. Tottenham initially explored a loan before switching to a permanent transfer, partly because Premier League rules prevent them from borrowing two players from the same club while they also pursue Mykhailo Mudryk.
But the destination makes this exit particularly striking.
Chelsea and Tottenham may conduct plenty of business elsewhere in the market, but direct transfers between the clubs have become exceptionally rare.

Tosin follows Carlo Cudicini after 17 years
The last senior player to move directly from Chelsea to Tottenham was Carlo Cudicini in January 2009.
Chelsea allowed their long-serving goalkeeper to join Spurs on a free transfer after almost a decade at Stamford Bridge. Tottenham’s own records confirm Cudicini arrived directly from Chelsea before going on to make 37 appearances for the club.
Nobody had followed that route in the 17 years since.
That long gap underlines how unusual Tosin’s move is.
The rivalry has frequently complicated potential business between the clubs, making Chelsea’s willingness to strengthen another London competitor noteworthy even though the defender was no longer central to Xabi Alonso’s plans.
Tosin had been attracting interest elsewhere for weeks. ReadChelsea previously reported that Marseille had stepped up their pursuit after Chelsea opened the door to an exit, before further indications emerged that his Stamford Bridge future was increasingly uncertain.
Spurs ultimately became his destination.
Why Chelsea were prepared to sanction Tottenham move
Tosin’s position in Alonso’s squad provides much of the explanation.
The 28-year-old had not been included in any of Chelsea’s opening three matchday squads this season after dropping down the centre-back hierarchy.
Chelsea have also spent the summer reshaping that area of the squad. Trevoh Chalobah departed for Como, while other defenders have been moved out on loan.
Tottenham, meanwhile, needed another centre-back as Kevin Danso pushed for an exit. Tosin’s Premier League experience and homegrown status made him an attractive replacement.
Chelsea therefore chose squad management over rivalry sentiment.
It is still a remarkable piece of business.
