Roma boss Giano Piero Gasperini has played down rumours linking Newcastle United transfer target Matias Soule with a move away from the club.
The Magpies have reportedly made enquiries about the Argentinian’s availability, but speaking before Roma’s match against Lecce on Monday night, Gasperini said:
“I respect everything. I don’t read much, but I hear about everything. I’ve never heard about a proposal for Soule.”
“For me, tomorrow he will still probably play. That doesn’t mean that the agents aren’t making moves, but there has never been anything concrete.”
Why is Soule on the club’s radar?
The 23-year-old is a left-footed right winger, and it is more than likely that Newcastle have considered him as a potential replacement for Jacob Murphy.
Nottingham Forest are believed to have opened talks about signing the 31-year-old, who has less than a year left on his contract at St James’ Park.
Soule would, therefore, provide much-needed competition for Anthony Elanga. The Swede has had an excellent start to the season, but there will be concerns over whether he can maintain this level, having struggled for large parts of his first campaign at the club.

Will this deal be affected by Fernandez-Pardo’s arrival at Newcastle?
Some may dismiss the rumours about Soule due to the fact that Matthias Jaissle’s side are about to secure the services of another forward.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo is set to seal a €60m (£51m) move to the North East from Lille, with the Magpies having beaten the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal to his signature.
The Belgian international can be deployed as a winger, as well as a striker. The crucial difference between him and Soule, though, is that they prefer to play on different wings. Fernandez-Pardo is right-footed and likes to cut in from the left when asked to play out wide.
