**Jamie Carragher has once again delivered a brutal assessment of Everton’s record during the Premier League era, describing the club as one of the worst run of the last three decades.**
The former Liverpool defender has been a long-standing critic of the way [Everton](https://readeverton.com/) have been managed off the pitch and famously described them as the “worst-run club in the country” during the final years of Farhad Moshiri’s ownership.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher has now returned to the subject.
“I stated this a while ago, a good few years ago, that I think Everton have been one of the worst-run clubs in the Premier League era,” he said.
Carragher pointed towards Everton’s standing before the formation of the Premier League and argued that there have been relatively few periods since then when the club has appeared particularly well run.
He did identify David Moyes’ first spell under Bill Kenwright as an exception, highlighting the clever recruitment which helped Everton consistently compete towards the top end of the Premier League.
It is worth remembering that Carragher grew up supporting Everton before going on to spend his entire senior career with Liverpool.
Indeed, when making similar criticisms in 2023, he stressed that he was speaking as an “ex-Everton fan” rather than simply as a former Liverpool player.
And there will undoubtedly be plenty of Evertonians who agree with much of his assessment.
The club has spent most of the Premier League era without a trophy and the Moshiri years in particular brought expensive recruitment mistakes, frequent managerial changes, financial problems and two points deductions.
But there is also an important distinction between Everton’s recent history and where the club finds itself now.
The Friedkin Group completed its takeover in December 2024, ending Moshiri’s turbulent ownership, while Everton have since moved into the Hill Dickinson and Moyes has returned as manager.
There has also been significant investment in reshaping the playing squad.
Carragher’s wider argument about Everton’s record during the Premier League era is therefore difficult to dismiss.
Whether the club he describes is the Everton of 2026 is more debatable.
New ownership, a new stadium and a rebuilt squad do not erase what has gone before, nor do they guarantee success.
But after years when supporters could justifiably question where their club was heading, there are at least signs that Everton are finally moving in a different direction.
But… the management of this transfer window, from the outside looking in, adds fuel to the Carragher argument. Whether we like it or not.
