Manchester United could hand Tosin Adarabioyo an unexpected route out of Stamford Bridge before the deadline. Chelsea have offered their centre-back to Old Trafford as a squad option, as per the latest transfer news. Michael Carrick may now add fresh defensive cover this week.
Tosin Adarabioyo becomes a transfer option for Man Utd
Ben Jacobs broke the story on Wednesday. As reported by Metro, Chelsea offered Tosin Adarabioyo to United as a squad player, not a starter. Michael Carrick wants more depth in the defence. Champions League football adds extra games this season, and United need players who can rotate through a long campaign. Other reports have echoed the same claim in the days since.
United lost 2-0 to Hull City on the opening weekend. That defeat exposed real gaps in the defence, and pundits noticed straight away. Fans have called for reinforcements ever since, with the back line still short of cover. The club spent big on midfield this summer, signing Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba. Attention has now turned to defence.
Tosin already knows English football well. He joined Chelsea from Fulham without a fee in 2024 and has played 38 Premier League games since. He also missed Chelsea’s matchday squad when they beat Fulham 3-2 on Monday. That decision suggests his role at Stamford Bridge is now shrinking.

Chelsea reshapes its defence with fresh signings
Chelsea have not stood still at the back this summer. Maxence Lacroix arrived from Crystal Palace in a £52 million deal. Chelsea also have a £30 million move close for Atalanta’s Honest Ahanor. Two new centre-backs naturally push others down the pecking order. United have also weighed up Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis as a cheaper defensive alternative.
Tosin Adarabioyo has slipped down that pecking order as a result. United have also shown interest in his teammate, Josh Acheampong. The Blues reportedly view the 20-year-old as untouchable, however, given his growing role under the current manager. That leaves Tosin as the more realistic option to leave this window.
There is history behind this link too. United nearly signed him in 2024, but he picked the Blues instead. “Once I knew Chelsea were interested, I was fully focused on that,” he said at the time. He also praised the move at the time, calling it the right decision for his career.

This near-miss adds valuable context to the current story. Tosin Adarabioyo would arrive at Old Trafford as squad backup, not as a guaranteed starter. Given his age and experience, he fits the profile of a squad player rather than a long-term solution at centre-back. He could still offer Carrick valuable cover across a demanding campaign.
Elsewhere, the Red Devils still have other priorities before deadline day. A left-back remains the clearer target. Former United midfielder Bryan Robson wants the club to push for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall. The Magpies insist Hall is not for sale, though. Joshua Zirkzee also looks set to leave for Fiorentina on loan, which could free up further funds for late business.
A move for Tosin Adarabioyo is far from confirmed right now. Still, it shows United will explore every option before the window shuts. With several deals still in motion, a late defensive addition would hardly surprise anyone. The right chance could still come along in these final days.
