Arsenal have reportedly made a late move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana as they look to replace Gabriel Martinelli following the Brazilian’s departure from the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are understood to have identified Fofana as a potential solution to the attacking vacancy created by Martinelli, with the club working against the clock to complete their business before the summer transfer window closes.
Fofana has emerged as one of the most exciting young attacking players in French football since joining Lyon. The Belgium international is capable of operating on either flank and has built a reputation for his pace, direct running and ability to take defenders on.
Those qualities have reportedly attracted Arsenal’s attention as Mikel Arteta looks to maintain the attacking depth required for another demanding campaign.
Martinelli’s departure has left Arsenal needing another option in the wide areas, particularly with the Gunners competing across the Premier League and European competitions. While Arsenal already possess significant attacking quality, losing an established winger means additional reinforcement could be considered important.
Fofana would offer a different profile from Martinelli while still providing the explosive pace and one-versus-one ability Arsenal value.
The timing of the reported approach means negotiations could prove challenging. With the transfer deadline approaching, Arsenal would need to move quickly to reach an agreement with Lyon and convince the French club to sanction the departure of one of their most highly regarded young players.
Lyon are unlikely to want to lose a player with significant long-term potential without receiving a substantial financial return. ARSENAL will therefore have to decide how far they are prepared to go to secure the Belgian before the window closes.
For Fofana, a move to the Emirates would represent a major step in his career. Joining Arsenal would give him the opportunity to work under Arteta and compete for major honours while testing himself in the Premier League.
Arsenal’s interest in Fofana makes considerable sense following Martinelli’s departure.
The Belgian has many of the qualities required to thrive in Arteta’s system. His acceleration and willingness to attack defenders could provide Arsenal with another dangerous outlet in the final third, while his age means there is plenty of room for further development.
Replacing Martinelli’s contribution will not be straightforward, but ARSENAL do not necessarily need to find an identical player. They need someone capable of providing goals, assists and attacking threat while competing for regular minutes.
The main concern is the timing. A deal completed at the last minute would carry plenty of pressure, particularly if Lyon demand a significant fee.
