Chelsea man arrives to seal Stamford Bridge exit–Faces fight at new club

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has been pictured Milano Malpensa Airport ahead of sealing a move to Como.

Italian journalist GianluVisco provides footage of the Chelsea goalkeeper on X today. The Spaniard is seen arriving at the airport before joining Como.

The journalist reports that he is set to join the Italian side today. He will be the deputy for number one goalkeeper Jean Butez.

Surplus to requirements

The 28-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa.

All indications had been that Xabi Alonso would back the Spaniard as his number one this season. In fact, he started in goal for Chelsea in their season opening win against Fulham.

But a shaky performance in that game, in which he was at fault for at least one of Fulham’s goals, led to a quick change of plan in West London.

They moved quickly to wrap up a deal for Martinez – who was then in place for the 4-3 win over Brighton last weekend – and push Sanchez to the door. He is now in Como to seal a deadline day move to Cesc Fabregas’ side.

Stamford Bridge spell ends

The move will bring an end to what has been a miserable three-year spell at Chelsea following a €23m move from Brighton in 2023.

He went on to make 112 appearances for the Blues in that time – the most of his career for any club – but never convinced a series of managers. A tally of 140 goals conceded, and 33 clean sheets is perhaps testament to that.

The Spanish goalkeeper has often found himself the focus of criticism and questioning in that time. Now he will be hoping to revive his career, and his reputation, at Como. First, though, it appears that he needs to oust Butez for the number one spot.
