Manchester City have agreed a staggering £125million deal with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernandez.
Newcastle United received a British record fee exactly 12 months ago when Alexander Isak controversially joined Liverpool on deadline day. The most bitterest transfer saga of last summer ended with the Swede finally getting his Anfield move.
While not as acrimonious, the Fernandez episode has certainly been long-winded. He has been widely tipped to join Man City all summer but the two clubs only began talks earlier today.
Xabi Alonso left the Argentine out of his Chelsea squad for the 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend - insisting he only wants “focused” players. In the dying embers of the window, Fernandez is now set to be granted his City wish.
The Athletic report that a bid worth £125million has been accepted, with Fernandez now set to undergo a swift medical. This deal will now match the British record fee paid for Isak last year.
Fernandez will hope to make a stronger impact at the Etihad than Isak has managed on Merseyside. Newcastle fans laughed from afar as the 26-year-old suffered a dismal - albeit injury-ravaged - debut campaign.
The Toon boo boys were out in force on the opening day of the Premier League season. Isak returned to St James’ Park, failing to make an impact while receiving relentless abuse from the home supporters.
Fernandez’s late move is set to take top-flight spending towards the £3.5billion mark. This shatters the £3billion record set a year ago as transfer fees continue to hyperinflate out of control.
