Saka strike steers Arsenal to narrow win over rebuilding Villa

BIRMINGHAM  -  Champions Arsenal maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season as Bukayo Saka’s second-half strike secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory over a rebuilding Aston Villa at Villa Park. Saka settled a tightly contested encounter in the 59th minute, converting from close range after substitute Eberechi Eze released Riccardo Calafiori, whose low cross found the England forward in the right place at the right time. Arsenal had dominated possession and territory without producing a sustained attacking onslaught, but their defensive organisation once again proved decisive. The visitors were briefly denied a penalty after a VAR review before Saka eventually provided the breakthrough.

Villa had their best opportunity of the opening half when Emiliano Buendia rattled the crossbar, but Unai Emery’s reshaped side struggled to create further danger. Remarkably, Villa failed to register a shot on target for the second consecutive match. The victory moved Arsenal onto six points alongside Manchester City, Hull City and Chelsea, while Villa remain without a point or a goal after two matches.

For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the result demonstrated that his side still possess the resilience that helped them win eight 1-0 matches during their title-winning campaign last season. “Really happy, this was a massive win,” Arteta said after recording his 151st Premier League victory in 250 games as Arsenal manager. “I think we deserved it. It was a great squad performance. I know how tough it is to win here.”

Arsenal’s squad depth was also evident as new signing Bruno Guimaraes and former Villa defender Ezri Konsa made their Premier League debuts after coming off the bench. Villa, meanwhile, are undergoing a significant rebuilding process following a major summer exodus. Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez departed this week, following earlier exits including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Konsa. Emery has responded by bringing in 11 new players, but cohesion will take time. Villa visit Hull City on Saturday, while Arsenal face their first major attacking test when they host free-scoring Chelsea on Sunday.
