Liverpool failed with an attempt to sign Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto on transfer deadline day, according to reports.
Manchester City had expressed an interest in signing Gusto earlier this summer but were not prepared to meet Chelsea’s £75 million asking price.
Gusto is now in his fourth season at Chelsea after joining in a €35m (£30.7m) from Lyon in 2023.
Liverpool have been in the market to sign a new right-back as Conor Bradley is sidelined with a long-term knee injury, which leaves Jeremie Frimpong as Andoni Iraola’s only experienced option in that position.

However, Liverpool were unsuccessful in their talks with Chelsea over a deal for Gusto on deadline day.
According to RMC Sport, Liverpool wanted a loan deal without an obligation to buy the France international.

Gusto featured for France at the World Cup this summer which meant his pre-season campaign with Chelsea was shortened.
However, the 23-year-old has started in both of Chelsea’s Premier League wins over Fulham and Brighton.
Elsewhere, Chelsea sold Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a £125m deal on deadline day.
Chelsea then reached an agreement with Monaco to sign Lamine Camara for €55m (£47.1m) before the Ligue 1 side cancelled the deal for the midfielder in the final hour of the transfer window.
