Richard Hughes has officially ended his tenure leading football operations at Anfield after a spectacular yet underwhelming run as Liverpool sporting director.
Sky Sports journalist Nicholas Bieber has shared a post on X tracking a private jet flight from Liverpool to Bournemouth, which could potentially carry Hughes to his home in Bournemouth en route to his new job in Saudi Arabia.
He will soon officially become Al Hilal’s sporting director after claims that he was ‘juggling’ transfer duties for Liverpool and the Saudi Pro League team.

In his time in charge of Liverpool transfers and contracts, the 47-year-old incurred a lot of criticism and scrutiny – which is to be expected at one of the biggest football clubs in the world – but the jury is out over whether or not his time in the role can be called a success.
Last summer, Hughes oversaw a total outlay of £445m to bring Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
So far, only Ekitike can be classed as a categorical success, while Wirtz needs time to prove he is the £116m midfielder the money suggests he is.
Isak, for all his goals at Newcastle United, is a shell of the man who operated with so much swagger and success on Tyneside, while Kerkez and Frimpon are similarly shadows of the players who earned their moves to Anfield.
Mamardashvili, meanwhile, has yet to win supporters over, but perhaps the pressure of living up to Alisson Becker’s high standards is too much to expect from any goalkeeper.

This summer, Liverpool have spent big again to sign Bradley Barcola (£123m) and Jeremy Jacquet (£60m). Victor Munoz was also signed from Osasuna for a lower fee (£34.6m), as well as a loan deal for Ronald Araujo, which includes an enticing option-to-buy clause worth £47m, but time will tell if the club decides to trigger that option.
The real concern, however, comes in how Hughes oversaw the almost total dismantling of the 2025 Premier League title-winning team either through sales or free transfers for the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate.
Whoever replaces Hughes will have an easy job of currying more favour with fans than Hughes, who is by no means popular on Merseyside.
