One of Hearts’ Conference League rivals have been embroiled in an almighty transfer deadline day saga that has stunned Chelsea and Everton.
Monaco were the pot one team that the Jambos were drew against in this year’s league phase of the Conference League, and they needed a player sale in the final days of this summer window to boost their coffers, alongside freeing up a non-EU squad spot to land Mexican midfielder Erik Lira. A deal was struck to sell Folarin Balogun to Everton but problems emerged in the medical on the last day of the transfer season in England.
As Chelsea sold midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City, they looked to pounce and sign Lamine Camara as his replacement, and Monaco agreed to his move away from Ligue 1. Everton returned for Balogun as they attempted to renegotiate the deal on cheaper terms with the deadline approaching and Monaco preferred the striker’s exit over Camara.

So as Balogun neared Everton, the plug was pulled on Camara’s move to Chelsea by the Jambos’ soon-to-be European foe, but more drama was ahead. Balogun then sensationally said no to joining the Toffees that threw all plans up in the air. It’s left a state of shock for Monaco, who failed to sell either player, raise funds or land Lira.
Chelsea meanwhile did not get a replacement for Fernandez and Everton are left with Thierno Barry as their only recognised centre-forward until January at least. They failed in a move for Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee after the Balogun deal was back on and sold Beto to Fiorentina previously. It does mean that Balogun and Camara are now in line to face Hearts on November 26 barring injury or suspension but those down south are far from happy.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims ‘Chelsea are FURIOUS as call it a deeply unprofessional way to conduct business’ and Graeme Bailey stated ‘ Everton were left “shocked” and “disappointed” by Folarin Balogun’s decision to walk away from his move to the club despite the transfer appearing to be complete.’ David Ornstein wrote in The Athletic: “Chelsea sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said Monaco had reneged on the agreement in a move related to Folarin Balogun’s transfer to Everton, which was also ongoing late on Tuesday night.

Why did Folarin Balogun not join Everton?
“Camara had already agreed terms with Chelsea on a six-year contract with the option of a further 12 months, had completed a medical and was set to arrive in London on Wednesday before Monaco pulled the plug. Everton submitted a dealsheet — a document submitted to the Premier League that secures a club an extra two-hour ‘grace period’ to get a transfer over the line past the league’s 11pm BST (6pm ET) deadline — to complete the transfer on Tuesday night, but Balogun opted not to proceed with the move and left their Finch Farm training ground without signing.
“Previously, Monaco sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, stated the initial deal for Balogun would consist of an initial €45million (£38.58m; $52.3m) plus €5million (£4.3m; $5.8m) in potential add-ons had been agreed between the two clubs, while Everton sources had said the deal was worth in the region of £40million ($54m; €46.7m).”
