The summer transfer window may have closed the new signings on September 1, but Chelsea have contacted a free agent to try and bolster their numbers in midfield.
The Blues parted ways with Enzo Fernández in the final hours of the summer, however, were unable to get a late replacement over the line.
This came as a result of Monaco pulling the plug on a deal to sign Lamine Camara, despite Chelsea believing everything was in order.

Chelsea contact Georginio Wijnaldum over possible free agent move
Clubs are still able to sign free agents despite the window being closed, and Chelsea have seemingly eyed up Georginio Wijnaldum as a potential option for them.
As per Santi Aouna, Chelsea have been in contact with the Dutchman in regards to a possible move to Stamford Bridge.
He said: “Looking for a midfielder, Chelsea has contacted Georginio Wijnaldum in the past few hours, who is a free agent.”
The 35-year-old has been in talks to leave Al-Ettifaq throughout the summer, with a move to MLS being touted at one stage.
However, he may now find himself having the chance to return to one of Europe’s biggest clubs as an emergency option to play in midfield.

Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Reece James are expected to play the brunt of the minutes in the middle of the park this season, but past them options are looking thin.
Wijnaldum would certainly bring Premier League experience with him to Stamford Bridge, having been featured regularly for Liverpool under former manager Jurgen Klopp.
This was some time ago though, and it remains to be seen as to whether he can make a meaningful contribution to a side pushing to return to the Champions League.
Chelsea are expected to be in the market for a new permanent midfielder from as early as January. Adam Wharton and Alex Scott dominated their shortlists this summer.
Both were deemed too important to their current clubs at the late stages of the window, however Chelsea will fancy their luck when they get another opportunity.
