Chelsea has made contact with Georginio Wijnaldum about a surprise transfer switch to Stamford Bridge, according to reports, which would bring the former Liverpool star back to the Premier League.

That's according to Footmercato, which claims that the Blues are interested in the Dutch ace as a potential free agent option, as the West London club continues to survey the market for midfield reinforcements.

It follows a chaotic transfer deadline day for Chelsea, as Enzo Fernandez was sold to Manchester City for a record-equaling fee worth over $165 million, leaving the team scrambling for a replacement.

A deal was struck with AS Monaco for Lamine Camara, someone Liverpool had shown interest in, but ultimately decided against making a move for in the remaining weeks of the summer transfer window.

Despite reaching an agreement in the region of $63 million for the Senegalese international, there was late drama, as the French club pulled out of a deal at the last moment, leaving Xabi Alonso's side desperate in its attempt to find another option before the window slammed shut.

Chelsea ultimately failed to do that, which has led to the pursuit of a possible free agent on the market, of which there are a few high profile names available.

While Paul Pogba is one that instantly stands out, Wijnaldum is a name that is also there, having become something of a forgotten Liverpool legend compared to some of his teammates of his era.

The 35-year-old left Anfield in 2021 to join PSG, where he spent two years without making much of an impact, with a loan to AS Roma thrown into the mix, before he ultimately sealed a move away in 2023.

After leaving the French capital, Wijnaldum moved to Saudi Arabia to play for Al-Ettifaq, spending two years playing under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

In that time he racked up over 100 appearances for the club, but waved farewell to it this summer when his three-year contract came to an end.

Now on the search for another club, the veteran could be the unexpected winner from a transfer saga that has fallen out at Chelsea in recent hours.

It would see him reunite with Jordan Henderson, who he played alongside 171 times for Liverpool and Al-Ettifaq, with 105 wins to their name in those matches next to each other.

A reunion with provide yet another link between Liverpool and the current Chelsea team, with plenty of familiar faces set for a showdown between the sides in early December.
