Chelsea have moved on from the disappointment of missing out on Monaco’s Lamine Camara, by targeting Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer.
Journalist Santi Aouna reports that Chelsea have contacted Wijnaldum after missing out on the Monaco star on deadline day.
He states that the Blues want to react quickly to that disappointment – and find a replacement for Enzo Fernandez – by moving for the former Liverpool star. He is available on a free transfer after leaving Al-Ettifaq.
Chelsea move on from Camara
Chelsea had lined up a deadline day move for Lamine Camara after agreeing to sell Fernandez to Manchester City.
The deal appeared to be on late in the window, with Monaco sanctioning it as Folarin Balogun’s move to Everton stumbled. Everton then reactivated that deal late on, causing Monaco to block Camara’s exit as they had secured the funds they had been seeking.
That ultimately backfired on everyone as Balogun then decided he didn’t want to join Everton late on. So, they were left without a striker, Chelsea were left without a midfielder – having honoured Fernandez’s move to the Etihad – and Monaco never sold one of the two players they needed to sell.
Chelsea make contact
While the Toffees and Monaco are licking their wounds, Chelsea have moved on quickly. Aouna reports that they’ve made an enquiry with Wijnaldum. He’s available on a free transfer after leaving Al-Ettifaq.
The 35-year-old is now searching for his next club, and it seems Chelsea are willing to offer a reunion with former Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson at Stamford Bridge.
He also fits into the Blues’ new look strategy of signing experience to help their youth. Henderson was a part of that process alongside Danny Welbeck, and now Wijnaldum could be added to the mix.
For now, it’s simply an enquiry but it will be something to keep an eye on now the window has closed.
