Liverpool have “concerns” in two vital areas of the pitch after a disappointing summer transfer window, according to a new claim from journalist James Pearce.
It hasn’t been the best 12 months or so for the Reds in the transfer market, with supporters left frustrated by a lack of activity since the end of last season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has even bemoaned the business that was done this time last year, saying it could end up looking disastrous:
It’s the first game of the season, but my fear is this window of 12 months ago could set Liverpool back a year or two, to fix it,” he said.
“Yes, it’s one game under Iraola, but we’re talking 12 months of underperformance from all of these players except [Ekitike]. If this doesn’t change in the next two or three months under Iraola, and these players improving, I think we’re going to be looking at that as arguably the worst transfer window we’ve probably seen in Premier League history, when you consider the fees for these players, and what it’s going to do for Liverpool.”
Writing on X, Pearce has now given his verdict on the latest window, saying Liverpool have “concerns” at right-back and in midfield, following no additions there:
“A mixed window for Liverpool. Barcola/Munoz give them pace & threat out wide they craved, Jacquet looks a real asset & Araujo on loan made sense, but concerns at RB/CM unaddressed. Keeping Gakpo was right call. Minteh or Sarr would have been a downgrade.”
Liverpool fans have every right to vent their frustration
Liverpool’s transfer window this summer left a lot to be desired, even though Bradley Barcola could be a sensational signing, and both Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz look like good additions.
Not signing a right-back or a central midfielder makes close to zero sense, and unless Jeremie Frimpong improves dramatically and Trey Nyoni steps up in the middle of the park, it will come back to bite the Reds.
You have to feel sorry for Andoni Iraola, who clearly wanted more signings than he has been given, making life more difficult than it needed to be for him.
It isn’t good enough.
