Chelsea have been told that the arrival of Emiliano Martinez could be the signing of the summer in the Premier League. The Blues completed the £7.5 million capture over the weekend.

The Argentinian was thrown straight into the action, starting the 4-3 Premier League win over Brighton on Sunday afternoon. The signing fills a position that has been identified by pundits as a problem for Chelsea.

Robert Sanchez, who played the Blues’ opening win over Fulham, has been criticised for his performances as first choice at Chelsea. The Spaniard has now completed a deadline day loan to Spanish side Como after being replaced in the pecking order by Martinez.

The end of the transfer window has brought up discussions over who has made the best signing of the summer. Brentford midfielder Mamadou Sangare has caught the eye so far, and was named man of the match in the Bees’ 3-0 win over Tottenham.

When asked if Brentford had made the signing of the summer with Sangare, Redknapp instead pointed to Chelsea: "Yeah for me, and also Emi Martinez as well, that was a really smart one,” he said.

“You couldn't take Chelsea seriously this season if they kept the goalkeeper in place. Not that I don't think he's going to come back and have a really good career, maybe just not at Chelsea.

“But that Emi Martinez one with his experience and quality that he possesses, I think it gives Chelsea a really good chance.

“That's the question mark that everyone had against them: 'Is the goalkeeper good enough?' and he certainly is."

Martinez established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League during his time at Aston Villa. His performances in the 2022 World Cup helped Argentina to lift the trophy, with him named the best goalkeeper in the World.

The 34-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Stamford Bridge, following confirmation of the move, he said: "I'm delighted to be at this football club.

"Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I'm just over the moon - I can't wait to get started.

"I want to be successful here. I'm someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club because it's a football club that wins titles, so I think it's a good match.

"I'm all passion and I play with my heart. I will give 100% every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the supporters proud."
