Former Liverpool defender confirms return to club after terminating contract

The transfer window is now closed after a dramatic end to proceedings, with Liverpool reportedly making some late moves on Tuesday.

It was a relatively quiet deadline day for the Reds, whose only signing was goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans. The 18-year-old will return to Genk for the 2026/27 season before joining Liverpool next summer after signing a long-term contract.

Liverpool’s major signing came a day earlier, with Bradley Barcola completing his move from PSG. However, reports suggest the Reds made late attempts to sign Chelsea defender Malo Gusto and Lamine Camara, whose move to Stamford Bridge dramatically collapsed.

Attention now turns to the pitch, with Andoni Iraola’s side seeking their first win of the season after back-to-back draws.

Former Liverpool defender Conor Coady has also confirmed he is back at the club after leaving Wrexham. The 33-year-old is a free agent after terminating his contract with the Championship side earlier this week.

Coady joined Wrexham from Leicester City last year but made just six appearances. He came through Liverpool’s academy and made two first-team appearances before leaving for Huddersfield Town in 2014.

He has since played for Wolves and Everton and spent time on loan at Charlton last season. Coady told BBC Radio 5 Live that he is now training with Liverpool’s academy while also assisting U21s head coach Rob Page.

“I’m trying to keep myself busy. I’m lucky enough to get the opportunity to go into Liverpool’s under-21s,” Coady said. “I came through there. I’m doing a little bit of coaching with the boys, which has been brilliant.”

“The lads at Liverpool are amazing with me,” Coady added. “The players but also Jay Spearing and Rob Page who gave me the opportunity to come in, mirror them a little bit, be in the office before training and look at how they plan a session.

“If they need numbers, I’ll jump in and keep myself fit as well. That’s what it’s looking like at the minute. I’m obviously speaking to my agent about different bits that are going on. I’m not massively in a rush because I want to make sure it’s right.”
