A detailed post-window investigation from The Athletic reports that multiple sources believed Arsenal needed significant player sales to avoid approaching UEFA’s squad cost ratio limits after spending more than £600million across three summers.
Arsenal strongly dispute that interpretation and maintain they were not at risk of breaching UEFA regulations.
The revelation adds important context to a window in which Mikel Arteta strengthened heavily in midfield and defence but Arsenal ultimately walked away from several attacking deals.

The Athletic’s James McNicholas reports that Arsenal entered the summer intending to generate considerably more money through sales.
As the anticipated fees failed to materialise, the club widened the group of players who could potentially generate significant income.

That exit would substantially improve Arsenal’s sales total after a summer in which recruitment spending again outweighed the money initially generated through departures.

None of this changes the quality of the players Arsenal signed.
Bruno Guimarães has strengthened an already formidable midfield, Ezri Konsa offers vital defensive cover following William Saliba’s injury and Christos Tzolis gives Arteta another attacking option.

But the latest information does change how some of the final weeks of the window can be understood.

They ultimately sanctioned exits for several attackers, sent Ethan Nwaneri to Borussia Dortmund on loan and are preparing to sell Martinelli.
Yet the marquee attacking addition Arteta pursued never arrived.
