The summer transfer window slammed shut on Tuesday evening, with Premier League clubs once again breaking the record for money spent.
Chelsea were at the centre of several of the window’s biggest sagas, culminating in the Blues missing out on one of their key targets on deadline day.
Having agreed to sell Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Premier League rivals Manchester City, Chelsea had agreed a deal with Ligue 1 outfit Monaco for Lamine Camara.
The Blues were then told that the French side had pulled out of the deal after agreeing to sell striker Folarin Balogun to Everton, leaving Chelsea furious as they were unable to source a replacement for the departing Fernandez.
In the hours since the window shut, it has been rumoured that the west London outfit are plotting a sensational move to sign a former Premier League midfielder, but it has now emerged that the club are not planning on doing so.
As per Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are not currently planning to sign free agent Gini Wijnaldum as an emergency back-up in midfield.
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso could face a potential issue in the coming weeks, with Moises Caicedo having been forced off during their game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, despite only being introduced as a second-half substitute.
Wijnaldum enjoyed five successful seasons with Liverpool
Fellow midfielder Romeo Lavia has also been plagued by injury throughout his time at Stamford Bridge, while veteran Jordan Henderson – signed over the summer after leaving Brentford – is also currently sidelined.
Captain Reece James will likely be forced to act as a makeshift midfielder at times this season, while new signing Valentin Barco could also be relied upon.
Wijnaldum, 35, first arrived in England when he joined Newcastle United back in 2015, before moving to Liverpool the following year.
The Dutchman spent five successful seasons with Liverpool, making more than 230 appearances for the club across all competitions before departing to join Paris Saint-Germain.
The midfielder has since spent time with Italian outfit Roma and Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, but has been without a club since leaving the Pro League club earlier this summer.
