Andoni Iraola can still ass some new signings to his Liverpool squad even after the summer transfer window closed, with a number of big names still available as free agents

The summer transfer window is closed - but that doesn’t mean Liverpool’s chance to make new signings is over.
Andoni Iraola has four new additions to his squad for the 2026/27 season, including Bradley Barcola, who finally completed his big-money move from Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week. Ronald Araujo, Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet are also among the ranks now, while Ifeanyi Ndukwe and goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans will also be included next year following their loan spells.
There are still major question marks over the squad assembled though, with fans not too impressed at the failure to address issues in midfield and at right-back - not to mention not signing a true replacement for Mohamed Salah.
Iraola will be hoping his current options silence their doubters, but should he need further reinforcements, he does have a slew of free agents to choose from.
Of course, there are generally very good reasons why those players are still without clubs at this stage, and one look at the names available hardly inspires confidence.
Nevertheless, Liverpool.com has taken a look at five names the Reds could turn to right now…
Ismael Bennacer
If we’re being completely realistic, none of the names on this list are likely to be coming to Liverpool any time soon. One or two though do at least make some sense.
For starters, Ismael Bennacer would provide an option as a defensive midfielder - something which Liverpool fans have been crying out for after the first two games of the season. The 28-year-old is looking for a new club after having his contract at AC Milan mutually terminated.

He did spend last season on loan with Dinamo Zagreb, so there would be serious questions about whether he’s up to the standard for the Premier League anymore, and injury problems led to him making just 19 appearances in total. Still, if those problems in midfield persist, then the option’s there.
Yves Bissouma
A familiar name following spells with Brighton and Tottenham, Yves Bissouma is available after his contract with the latter expired. The 30-year-old has been previously linked with Liverpool, although that was a while ago now.
His age obviously doesn’t fit the usual profile the Reds would go for, and there would be major question marks over his injury record and discipline, given he was dropped by Spurs last season for being persistently late to training.
With Premier League experience under his belt though, he could be another option to consider in midfield, although he should only be considered for a short-term deal if he is to be looked at in any capacity.
Diogo Leite
A name that might not be all that familiar, Diogo Leite is actually perhaps one of the more palatable names on offer as a free agent right now.
A regular in Union Berlin’s side when he was fit, the 27-year-old would offer another option at center-back. While that might not seem like a pressing issue, it would potentially free up Ronald Araujo or Joe Gomez to give another option at right-back.
Leite would also offer something unique to Liverpool, given he is left-footed. Some actual backup to Virgil van Dijk doesn’t sound too bad at all.

Dani Carvajal
We know what you’re thinking - we’re scraping the barrel now. At 34, Dani Carvajal probably shouldn’t be a consideration for Liverpool at all, especially after an injury-hit final season at Real Madrid.
The right-back situation hardly looks sound though. An injury to Jeremie Frimpong, who hasn’t exactly convinced in the role yet, would leave the Reds having to rely on Araujo or an injury-prone Gomez to fill in - there isn’t even Curtis Jones to call upon now, and Dominik Szoboszlai should be allowed to continue in his best position in midfield.
Caravajal is not an option that would instil confidence in supporters, but if the situation at right-back gets any worse, he might be better than nothing.

Jadon Sancho
There might have been a time in the not-too distant past when Jadon Sancho would have been a real consideration for Liverpool. Before his move to Manchester United, he looked set to take the world by storm.
Now, you seriously wonder where he could actually go next. He’s certainly not alone in having been an expensive flop at Old Trafford, but loan spells back at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa have failed to rebuild his reputation.
This would definitely be a ‘worst case scenario’ type of signing, and yet another player suited to the left wing feels like overkill. He is perhaps a bit more versatile than others, having featured plenty of times on the right, so it’s… something, at least.
