On 3rd September 1955, Wolverhampton Wanderers, known for their prolific goal-scoring in the 1950s, made headlines with a remarkable performance against Cardiff City in a First Division match. The match, held at Ninian Park, saw Wolves secure a resounding 9-1 victory in front of 40,060 spectators. Johnny Hancocks opened the scoring for Wolves just 30 seconds into the game and went on to complete a hat-trick. Roy Swinbourne also scored a hat-trick, while Peter Broadbent added two goals and Jimmy Mullen contributed one. This emphatic win equalled the record for the highest top-flight away score, a record that remains unbroken. Interestingly, when Cardiff visited Molineux for the return fixture on 31st December, they managed to defeat Wolves 2-0, marking Wolves’ first home defeat of the season. At the time of that loss, the 9-1 victory in Cardiff was Wolves’ only away win of the season.

On 3rd September 2014, England played their first match after the World Cup, a friendly against Norway at Wembley Stadium. The match attracted a crowd of just 40,181, setting a new low attendance record for an England game at the revamped Wembley. The low turnout reflected the fans’ dissatisfaction with the team’s recent performances. Additionally, the match faced stiff competition on television, as it was broadcast live on ITV against the popular programme, the Great British Bake Off, on BBC. Nearly twice as many viewers opted to watch the Bake Off. Despite the challenges, newly-appointed England captain Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the match from the penalty spot, securing a 1-0 victory for England.
