AS Monaco’s sales of Folarin Balogun and Lamine Camara collapsed in the final hours of the summer transfer window this year but with their qualities, both of them could find newer pastures in January as interest in them is not far and few in between.
Ben Jacobs (h/t Caught Offside) has reported that Chelsea’s failure to sign Camara does not mean their pursuit of the midfielder has ended, especially after Enzo Fernandez’s exit, but they are now expected to face competition from Liverpool next year.
Monaco and Chelsea had agreed on a £47 million transfer for the 22-year-old but the move not falling in place has given the Reds a sniff about signing the Senegalese international. As per the source, they have vowed to return for his services next year.
With Monaco requiring funds to balance their books and overcome a debt of roughly £50 million, it is imperative that they sell players and could entertain offers for Camara as soon as in January despite his presence in their team being vital.
Camara not what Liverpool require this season
Lamine Camara is an excellent midfielder. His aggression, tackling, press resistance and ball progression from the deeper areas of the pitch are undoubtedly important attributes, but whether Liverpool require such a profile is debatable.
Andoni Iraola already has the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch to call upon to be utilised in such a capacity, and what the former Bournemouth star requires now is a creative midfielder rather than a deeper-lying option.
Meanwhile, Chelsea might actually see a lot more value in adding Camara to their setup while the possibility of regular game time in a defensive position alongside Moises Caicedo could also compel him to join them over Liverpool, where there is a healthy competition for minutes in the double pivot.
Camara’s price is unlikely to change in January unless he does exceptionally well over the next few months, so it will be interesting to see if there are any more entrants in the race to sign him.
