Harvey Elliott has revealed that Liverpool teammate Giorgi Mamardashvili convinced him to make a move to Valencia. The English midfielder completed a switch to the Spanish side late in the summer window, having fallen down the pecking order under Andoni Iraola.
He is set to spend the season on-loan at the Mestalla, with no option to make the deal a permanent one.
Explaining why he chose to pursue the switch, Elliott has confirmed he had conversations with goalkeeper Mamardashvili, who played 134 times for the La Liga side ahead of joining Liverpool.
Speaking at his unveiling, Elliott said: “Giorgi told me the fans are incredible. When things aren’t going well, they support you and are with you until the end. And when you win and play well, they’re the best fans you could have.
“He also told me the city is amazing. We talked a little, although I didn’t want to ask too many questions so as not to give away what was going on. But Giorgi spoke very highly of the city and, above all, of the club. I’m very excited and eager to experience it for myself.”
Meanwhile, he also confirmed that Valencia boss Carlos Corberan also had a considerable role to play. Elliott added: “It was my decision to come here.
"I had a few calls with Carlos Corberan, in which we talked about my objectives and what he expected of me as a player. The start of the season has been tricky, but there’s still a long way to go.”
Elliott’s move to Spain comes after a tricky few seasons in the Premier League. He spent last season on loan at Aston Villa but made just nine appearances and scored just one goal, with Villa opting not to sign him permanently.

And Elliott is now keen to rediscover his best form with his adoptive side. He said: “On a personal level, my goal is to regain my self-confidence, play freely and enjoy my football. I’m very grateful for the opportunity Valencia CF have given me. As a team, the goal is to achieve everything possible, and I want to contribute -starting this Sunday.”
Elliott joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Fulham back in 2019 and he has gone on to make 149 appearances for the Reds, scoring 15 goals. His current deal at Anfield is set to run until 2028.
Valencia will certainly hope that he can have an instant impact following their disappointing start to the season. They have just one point from their opening three games of the season ahead of this weekend’s clash with Barcelona.
