The 2026/27 summer transfer was one to remember, as Premier League clubs went wild in the aisles, splashing out a combined total of £3.49 billion on signing new players. Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham were among the biggest spenders, with all the sides investing considerable sums of money in improving their squads for the current campaign.

Transfer Deadline Day itself proved to be an entertaining one: Malick Fofana produced a back and forth hijacking saga for the ages between Sunderland and Crystal Palace, Everton failed to sign six of their targets, and Manchester City finally got their £125m man Enzo Fernandez - a move that came back to haunt Chelsea, who didn’t manage to land a replacement.
While the window is now closed until January, the transfer rumour mill is still very much up and running. Today’s round-up begins at the Etihad Stadium, where Man City will no doubt be rubbing their hands with glee after a simply flawless summer window. However, according to Caught Offside, they could soon face a battle to hang onto star midfielder Rayan Cherki.
The story says that Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are all “keeping tabs” on the France international, with City valuing their asset at around £77m. It’s said that no formal offers have been made, which is rather obvious, given that the window is now closed. It’s suggested that it would take an “astronomical” offer for City to consider a sale.
The 3AM Verdict: T his is the kind of odd transfer non-story we tend to see in the aftermath of a window, as the annual autumnal barrel scraping begins. There’s no doubt that plenty of elite clubs wouldn’t mind getting Cherki, but given that no deals can go through until January, it doesn’t really mean anything remotely substantial at the moment.

Over to St. James’ Park next, where Newcastle United signed new striker Matias Fernandez-Pardo for £55m before the deadline. The Magpies are now looking stronger up top, with the rejuvenated Yoane Wissa and William Osula also options to lead the line. According to Football Insider, they’re already planning to recruit another forward in January.
They say that both Newcastle and Aston Villa will resume their apparent pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane come the winter window, with the player said to be of particular interest to the Magpies due to their desire to sign talented young players. It’s said that both clubs feel they have a “better chance” of signing the Cameroon international in the new year than they did over the summer.
The 3AM Verdict: We raised suspicions overa remarkably similar story from the same outlet before the window closed, which also offered a distinct lack of any real detail, and appeared to use most of its word count to merely hype up the player. Until we see other sources making the connection, we’re far from convinced on this one.

We touched on Chelsea’s failure to sign a Fernandez replacement at the top of the page - in short, they moved for Monaco’s Lamine Camara, who ended up remaining at the Ligue 1 club after a huge fiasco that involved Everton’s ultimately doomed attempts to sign their striker, Folarin Balogun. The Blues ended up empty handed, with a gaping hole in their midfield.
According to transfer insider Ben Jacobs, things could now get even worse for the Blues. Speaking on Talk Sport, he claimed that Liverpool called both Monaco and Camara - at an earlier stage during Deadline Day when he looked to have no chance of joining Chelsea - to wait until 2027, when the Reds could then make their move following the likely exit of Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.
Jacobs made it clear that Liverpool did not have any involvement in the player not joining the Blues, with the collapse in the sale being a consequence of the chaotic Balogun saga.
The 3AM Verdict: This could be a chance for Liverpool to get revenge on Chelsea, after being humiliated by missing out on both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to the Blues in the space of just four days back in 2023. Chelsea will probably have to hope they qualify for the Champions League this season to have any hope of signing Camara over the Reds. Even then, it’s likely that the Blues’ relationship with Monaco is so fractured after Deadline Day that the two clubs may not do business again for some time.
