Everton finished a chaotic summer transfer window with a £25.35m net profit on transfer business, according to BBC Sport – a figure that will do little to quieten the questions being asked about the club’s recruitment.
The number is striking given what chief executive Angus Kinnear said just two weeks before the deadline.
Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside on August 18, Kinnear said Everton were in a stable financial position, while also describing the squad as being “in a good place”.
What followed was not the ambitious end to the window Evertonians had hoped for.
Everton sold Iliman Ndiaye, Beto, Tim Iroegbunam and Nathan Patterson on deadline day, while their proposed £40m move for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun collapsed at the final hurdle.
£25m Everton figure raises more questions
Jack Grealish returned on loan, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles arrived from Lyon, but David Moyes has still been left with a squad that looks worryingly thin in several areas. Just eighteen senior players.
Most obviously, Thierno Barry is now the only recognised senior centre-forward.
BBC Sport’s calculation that Everton ended the summer £25.35m in profit on transfer business therefore makes uncomfortable reading.
Net transfer spend does not tell the entire story, of course, but it does add another question after a window in which Moyes repeatedly made clear that he wanted more players and greater depth.
Everton have banked significant fees while finishing the window with only those 18 senior outfield players.
For supporters already questioning the club’s planning, that £25.35m figure is unlikely to make the events of deadline day any easier to comprehend.
