Arsenal explored a late move for Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez after realising they wouldn’t be able to sign Julian Alvarez and Victor Osimhen.
This is according to the Daily Mail, who report the Gunners assistant manager, Gabriel Heinze, reached out to his compatriot Martinez to gauge his interest in joining the London club.
Inter refused to entertain any offers for their star forward, who has been on their books since 2018.
The 29-year-old has been a consistent performer for the Serie A club over the years, scoring 175 goals in 378 appearances across all competitions.
Inter remain in a strong position regarding Martinez’s future, with the striker’s contract not expiring until 2029.
Arsenal initially targeted a move for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez.
While the Rojiblancos were willing to consider a big offer from the Premier League champions, Alvarez made it clear he only wanted a move to Barcelona.
Atletico firmly refused to negotiate with their league rivals and the Argentine decided to stay at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Arsenal also explored a blockbuster move for Victor Osimhen, but a transfer didn’t materialise due to the financial costs involved.
The north Londoners have made some top-quality additions this summer, including Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United.
But they failed to find a game-changing attacker who could elevate their squad.
Arsenal pushed hard to secure a deal for Vinicius Junior, only for the Brazilian to sign a new long-term contract at Real Madrid.
