Report: Liverpool's ideal Florian Wirtz understudy transfer target now out for months

**[Florian Wirtz](https://www.anfieldwatch.co.uk/liverpool-fc/players/florian-wirtz/)'s performances last season were poor.**

The German was brought in to try and become Liverpool's main creator after Trent Alexander-Arnold left.

And, while he managed to contribute to a few goals and assists, he did nowhere near as well as anyone expected him to.

When playing for Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso saw Wirtz as his most important player with almost all of their attacks going through him.

However, with his performances for Liverpool not being up to scratch, Richard Hughes had many conversations with potential new attackers.

And now, it feels like the Reds may have dodged a bullet as one of their potential targets has now been ruled out of action for the foreseeable future.

Giannis Konstantelias has torn his ACL and will not play for most of the 2026-27 season

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Giannis Konstantelias was one of the many attackers to have been linked with a Liverpool switch this summer.

For some reason, the Anfield outfit seemed to have an obsession with left-wingers with the club actually ending the campaign with four of them among their ranks.

Indeed, most of them are versatile and can play anywhere across the front three but, the fact that all four of them are natural left-wingers is a tad concerning.

However, in Konstantelias' case, he's also played many games as a number 10 which is why he'd have been Liverpool's perfect understudy for Wirtz.

But, as per an update from Patrick Berger, it seems like the Reds may have gotten away with not signing him as he seems to have torn his ACL within his first few games for Borussia Dortmund.

"Bitter fear confirmed: ACL tear in the left knee for Giannis Konstantelias (23/🇬🇷). Will be out for several months," he shared via X.

"The #BVB is consulting internally on how to deal with it. According to Sky reports, action will be taken on the absence. Ole Book and Lars Ricken will not be traveling with the team to Hamburg on Monday.

"Book is also not expected to be at the cup match in person on Tuesday."

Florian Wirtz has to perform better for Liverpool this season

-------------------------------------------------------------

As mentioned, even though Wirtz did chip in with a few goals and assists last season, it was nothing compared to what he was expected to do.

The German and Alexander Isak were meant to transform the way that Liverpool play and, in the end, they did not manage to do that.

And, even though Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola have been brought in this summer, the Reds will still be looking towards Wirtz to be the connector from Iraola's midfield to his attack.

Indeed, he'll obviously be given plenty of chances to push forward himself but, if he doesn't at least end the campaign with 15 assists for his teammates, some serious questions will need to be asked.

The midfielder cost Liverpool £116 million to bring in and, for a fee that high, you'd have certainly expected a lot more from him.

Here's hoping he can find his goal-scoring boots and actually make a difference at Anfield.
