Liverpool may have secured themselves a very interesting option for next summer.
According to James Pearce, Liverpool have an option to sign Ronald Araújo permanently for around £47 million next summer.
Even more interestingly, there was reportedly no loan fee involved, while Araújo accepted a small pay cut to help facilitate his move from Barcelona.
That could turn out to be some very clever business from Liverpool.
Liverpool can take their time with Araújo
The beauty of this deal is that Liverpool don’t have to make a decision right now.
Araújo has arrived on loan, giving Liverpool an entire season to assess him properly.
They can see how he adapts to the Premier League.
They can see how he fits into Andoni Iraola’s system.
And, most importantly, they can decide whether they actually want to spend around £47m to keep him.
That is a very different proposition from committing £47m before knowing exactly how the player will fit.
The £47m option could be important
If Araújo has an excellent season, Liverpool have the opportunity to make the move permanent.
And if he proves to be an important part of Iraola’s defence, £47m could potentially look like very good value.
Liverpool have already shown this summer that they are prepared to spend significant money on players they believe can improve the squad.
But this deal gives them something different.
Flexibility.
They aren’t locked into a huge permanent transfer immediately.
They get to test the player first.
No loan fee makes it even more interesting
The fact that Liverpool reportedly haven’t paid a loan fee makes the arrangement particularly attractive.
Essentially, Liverpool get a season to assess a player of Araújo’s calibre without having to commit the full transfer fee immediately.
That gives the club time to make an informed decision.
And if things don’t work out?
Liverpool can simply allow him to return to Barcelona at the end of the season rather than being stuck with a player who doesn’t fit.
Of course, there will be wages and other costs involved, but the structure still gives Liverpool considerable flexibility.
Araújo could solve a few problems
One reason I like this deal is that Araújo brings something Liverpool have been missing.
He’s an experienced, physically powerful defender who can play at centre-back and has also operated at right-back.
That versatility could be extremely valuable for Iraola.
Liverpool have had concerns over their full-back situation, while defensive depth will inevitably be tested across a long season.
If Araújo can provide quality in more than one position, his value to the squad becomes even greater.
But Liverpool shouldn’t automatically sign him
This is important.
Just because Liverpool have an option to buy doesn’t mean they should exercise it.
They need to judge the player over the season.
How does he perform?
Can he stay fit?
Does he adapt to English football?
Does Iraola trust him?
Does he improve Liverpool’s starting XI?
And perhaps most importantly:
Is he worth £47m?
Those questions can be answered over the next 12 months.
The timing could be perfect
Liverpool have made a number of major investments this summer.
But rather than adding another permanent commitment immediately, the Araújo deal allows the club to spread the decision into next summer.
By then, Liverpool should know much more about the future of their defence.
They’ll know how Jérémy Jacquet is progressing.
They’ll know what role Conor Bradley can play.
They’ll know how the rest of the defensive squad has developed.
And they’ll have seen Araújo playing regularly in Iraola’s system.
That makes the £47m decision much easier.
Imagine Araújo has a brilliant season
This is the exciting scenario.
Imagine Araújo becomes a key player.
Imagine Liverpool’s defence improves.
Imagine he proves capable of playing centre-back and right-back when required.
Suddenly, Liverpool have a player they know fits the system and already understands the club.
They then have the option to sign him permanently for around £47m.
That could be an excellent piece of business.
Liverpool have given themselves options
For me, that’s what makes this deal so appealing.
Liverpool haven’t gambled £47m on Araújo.
They’ve given themselves the opportunity to spend £47m on him later if he proves he’s worth it.
And the player himself reportedly accepting a small pay cut to make the move happen suggests he wanted the opportunity too.
There is still a long way to go before we know whether Liverpool will exercise the option.
But that’s exactly the point.
They don’t have to decide yet.
Liverpool can watch.
Liverpool can assess.
Liverpool can wait.
And next summer, they can make the call.
If Ronald Araújo proves to be the defender Liverpool need, £47m could be a very easy decision to make.
For now, though, Liverpool have secured themselves a season to find out.
