Chelsea have been forced to turn to an in-house replacement for Enzo Fernandez after missing out on Lamine Camara.
Chelsea identified Camara as their primary target to replace Fernandez after accepting that the Argentine would be leaving the club on deadline day.
However, AS Monaco decided to keep hold of Camara after initially agreeing to sell the 22-year-old to the Blues.

Reece James set to replace Enzo Fernandez in midfield
Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Valentin Barco and Jordan Henderson are Chelsea’s remaining recognised midfielders.
It is defender Reece James, though, who is set to get the nod to play alongside Caicedo this season.
According to The Athletic, James is seen as the player to fill the spot that has been vacated by Fernandez.
Of course, Fernandez did not always line up next to Caicedo last term, with the Argentina international playing some games as a No.10.
Lavia is also fit again, while Xabi Alonso even used Malo Gusto in the middle of the park last time out, Chelsea’s 4-3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.
However, going forward, it looks like James will be Caicedo’s regular partner until Chelsea can sign a new midfielder.

What Reece James will bring to Chelsea’s midfield
Chelsea fans have already had a taste of James in midfield. He has filled in there before, including this season.
Physically, the 26-year-old is one of the strongest footballers in the Premier League, so he will bring strength to the middle of the pitch.
Technically, James is also a fantastic footballer. He is great at controlling the ball and he can spray a pass.
Being a defender, as expected, the England international can also tackle. Ultimately, James has all the attributes needed to play in central midfield.
Following Fernandez’s deadline day exit, some Chelsea fans have already settled on James starting in the engine room, and that is something that we could now see on Sunday when Alonso’s men take on Arsenal at the Emirates.
