Ethan Nwaneri reportedly had no hesitation about joining Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan from Arsenal, with England teammate Jobe Bellingham playing an important role in convincing the youngster that the move was right for him.
The highly rated Arsenal midfielder has made the temporary switch to Dortmund as he looks to continue his development by gaining regular first-team football at one of Germany’s biggest clubs.
Nwaneri’s decision to move abroad represents an important step in his career, particularly after breaking into Arsenal’s senior setup at a remarkably young age. The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in English football, but increased competition for places at the Emirates has made regular minutes difficult to guarantee.
Dortmund have developed a strong reputation for giving young players opportunities at the highest level, making the Bundesliga club an attractive destination for Nwaneri
“As soon as I heard about BVB’s interest and a meeting took place, everything developed very quickly,” Nwaneri told the Dortmund website. “After just a few hours, there were advanced talks taking place behind the scenes. As soon as I learned of their interest, I was ready to leave.”
“I’ve spoken to Jobe in the last few days,” Nwaneri revealed. “He asked: ‘What’s going on with you?’ And I told him that I couldn’t really say yet. But we talked a lot. And he kept saying that I should come to BVB. I’m happy that we’ll now be playing side by side.”
“The first time, you really leave your comfort zone, it’s completely new territory. But now I’m more relaxed, more open, and mentally better prepared. I’m used to it by now.”
Nwaneri needs consistent first-team football at this stage of his career, and Dortmund should provide an environment where he can compete at a high level while taking on greater responsibility.
The Bundesliga can also offer a different tactical and physical challenge from the Premier League, potentially helping Nwaneri become a more complete player.
Having Bellingham around could prove another major advantage. A familiar face who understands the demands of playing for Dortmund can help Nwaneri settle quickly and make the most of his experience.
For ARSENAL, the hope will be that Nwaneri returns next summer having played regularly, gained valuable experience and developed the confidence required to compete for a bigger role in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
