After not signing a new midfielder late in the transfer window, Chelsea may turn to their academy to help bolster the numbers in the middle of the park for this season.

Enzo Fernandez joined Manchester City on deadline day, and the Blues were unable to secure the signing of Lamine Camara from Monaco in the final minutes.

While Chelsea are considering striking a pre-agreement for Alex Scott, there are going to be at least a few months where their options in the middle of the park are going to be limited.

With Enzo Fernandez gone and Lamine Camara staying at Monaco, who should partner Moises Caicedo in midfield this season?

Chelsea could turn to Reggie Watson to help with midfield woes

This was only added to with Reggie Walsh and Dario Essugo completing loan moves away from the club, however the Blues do have an extremely talented youngster coming through their ranks.

Reggie Watson was given plenty of opportunities to impress during pre-season, even completing a full 90 minutes and impressing Xabi Alonso.

As per Flashscore, Watson may even get a chance to feature for the first team squad this season, with their midfield options looking limited.

These choices will also becoming even fewer should injury problems begin to plague Reece James and Romeo Lavia again as they have continued to do during their Chelsea careers.

At just 16 years of age, Watson would become one of the youngest players to feature for the Blues in the Premier League should he make his debut this season.

However, the youngster has made a ‘scary impression’ on the first team squad during training sessions, and has staked his claim to Alonso that he is ready to make a contribution.

Watson received comparisons to Declan Rice after appearing in pre-season, which on paper makes him one of the perfect candidates to partner someone with Moises Caicedo’s skillset.

There are still plenty of senior options available at the moment, however if required the club look comfortable with handing Watson this immense responsibility this season after their summer window mishaps.
