Lamine Camara’s proposed move to Chelsea collapsed in dramatic fashion on deadline day, with the midfielder’s representative reportedly furious at Monaco’s decision to pull the plug on the deal.
Chelsea had identified Camara as their preferred replacement for Enzo Fernandez after the Argentina international completed a reported £120million transfer to Manchester City. The Blues moved quickly to secure a successor and were understood to have reached an agreement with Monaco over a £47million deal for the Senegal international.
However, despite Chelsea believing the transfer had been agreed, Monaco ultimately decided against allowing Camara to leave late on Tuesday night.
The decision reportedly left Chelsea frustrated, particularly given the timing of the collapse and the club’s need to replace Fernandez before the transfer window closed.
Camara’s agent, former Premier League forward Diomansy Kamara, has subsequently criticised Monaco over the situation, adding another layer of controversy to an already chaotic deadline-day saga
Kamara wrote on Instagram: ‘The cases of Ismaila Sarr and Lamine Camara must all interrogate us.
‘We have to get out of this logic where the African player can sometimes give the feeling that he is just a commodity: you buy it, you set its price, you negotiate its future and, too often, your will seems to go to the background.
‘Our African players deserve respect. The respect of their work. The respect of their career. Respecting their ambitions. The respect of their voices
‘A transfer shouldn’t just be a matter of two clubs and numbers. Behind every contract, there’s a man, a career, dreams and life choices.
‘The fact that clubs can sometimes have the final word is a reality of professional football. But one question remains: what about the career and the will of the player?
‘The player must be able to be heard and respected in the decisions that determine his future.
‘Let’s never forget what’s important: behind every success, it’s the players who write history first.’
From CHELSEA’s perspective, the timing of the collapse makes this particularly frustrating. If the club genuinely believed all aspects of the transfer had been agreed, having the deal withdrawn so late left them with virtually no opportunity to find an alternative.
The decision to sell Fernandez for such a significant fee meant Chelsea needed to ensure they had sufficient midfield depth. Camara appeared to be the player identified to fill that gap, making Monaco’s late intervention even more problematic.
There is also a lesson here for CHELSEA. Deadline-day deals can be unpredictable, particularly when multiple transfers are dependent on one another.
