Arsenal reportedly made a late attempt to sign Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez during the closing stages of the summer transfer window as Mikel Arteta’s side explored one final attacking addition.
The Gunners are understood to have been monitoring the Argentina international as they assessed their options in attack, with the forward’s proven record at the highest level making him an attractive target.
Martinez has established himself as one of European football’s leading strikers since joining Inter, becoming a central figure for the Italian giants. His combination of movement, finishing ability and work rate has made him one of the most complete forwards in Serie A.
According to reports, Arsenal made an approach for the 28-year-old late in the window. However, the timing of the interest meant there was little opportunity to negotiate a deal that would have seen Martinez leave San Siro.
Inter have consistently valued their captain highly, while Martinez remains an important part of their plans. A late transfer would therefore have required significant negotiations between the two clubs, particularly given the difficulty of finding a suitable replacement before the deadline.
Arsenal’s reported interest nevertheless highlights the club’s desire to maintain competition for places in the final third. Arteta has been looking to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours on multiple fronts, and adding another elite-level striker would have given the manager another significant attacking option.
Martinez’s profile would have suited Arsenal’s ambitions. The Argentine is capable of leading the line but can also drop deeper and combine with teammates, making him a potentially useful fit for Arteta’s possession-based system.
Although ARSENAL ultimately failed to complete a deal, their reported interest in Martinez demonstrates the level of player the club is targeting.
The striker would have represented a major statement of intent. Martinez has won major domestic honours with Inter and played a key role for Argentina, giving him the experience required to perform under pressure.
There would, of course, have been questions surrounding the financial commitment required to sign him. Inter would have had little reason to sell their captain cheaply, while Martinez’s wages could also have made the deal extremely expensive.
However, if ARSENAL could have found a financially viable agreement, Martinez would have been an outstanding addition. His mentality, versatility and goalscoring record could have given the Gunners another dimension in attack
