While it remains to be seen if the 23-year-old will start, Andoni Iraola has confirmed that he will be in the squad.

“He trained well with us,” Iraola said.

“If everything goes well in today’s training, he will definitely be available tomorrow.”

Iraola has to now weigh up Barcola’s match fitness, having not played competitively since France lost 6-4 to England in the third-place playoff at the 2026 World Cup.

It may be that Cody Gakpo is preferred on the left wing, with Liverpool’s new £123 million man coming on as a second-half substitute.

Bradley Barcola’s “explosive” dribbling style

Harry McMullen has penned a great piece for This Is Anfield looking at Barcola and the dribbling style that makes him so dangerous:

“When he has grass to eat up, Barcola is nearly impossible to stop.

“His most explosive steps are usually the second or third in the carry, as he lures opponents in before pushing the ball beyond them and accelerating.

“Barcola also has freakish acceleration off the ball, more so than Ekitike or Isak, making him equally dangerous when darting into space behind.”

On this day in 1947, Gerard Houllier was born in Therouanne in France.

The Frenchman took joint charge of Liverpool with Roy Evans in 1998, before becoming the Reds’ sole manager soon after, enjoying six great years at Anfield.

Houllier’s crowning achievement was the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup treble that he secured in 2000/01, bringing much-needed trophies back to the club.

Sadly, he passed away in 2020 at the age of 73 and is still missed greatly to this day.
