Midfield was arguably the strongest area of Chelsea’s squad. In Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, the Blues had two of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
However, Fernandez was sold to Manchester City on deadline day, while Chelsea failed to bring in a replacement after the collapse of Lamine Camara’s transfer from AS Monaco.
As a result, midfield has now become a bit of a dilemma for Xabi Alonso and at the worst possible time.
Chelsea’s next game is against Premier League champions Arsenal at the Emirates.
Chelsea fans want to see Reece James partner Moises Caicedo in midfield
With Fernandez no longer around, The Chelsea Chronicle asked supporters on TalkingPoints who should play alongside Caicedo this season.
Romeo Lavia, Valentin Barco and Jordan Henderson were all mentioned, but the consensus was that James should get the nod.

Caicedo had to be taken off in Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, so the Blues could be without the 24-year-old for their trip to Arsenal on Sunday.
That would be an absolute disaster, especially with the Club World Cup holders no longer having Fernandez to call upon.
Romeo Lavia is fit again at least and is performing well. The Belgian even managed to score against Brighton, which was his first goal for the club since his arrival from Southampton in 2023.

If Caicedo cannot play, you would expect both Lavia and James to start in the engine room at the Emirates.
The above shows why Chelsea really needed Camara, who would have been a great partner and alternative to Caicedo.
Like Caicedo, Camara is a good tackler and a midfielder who can thwart attacks. He would have been a great asset to have for Sunday’s trip to the Emirates, but hopefully Caicedo is fit and can get the job done alongside James or Lavia.
