The NBA brought the hammer down on the Los Angeles Clippers, stripping them of five first-round picks and slapping a $30 million fine for their blatant violation of NBA cap rules. Without a star, or much of their draft capital for the foreseeable future, the Clippers are effectively dead; at least, as it currently stands.
Despite their situation, there is a world where the Clippers can somewhat recover if they play their cards right. Part of the process may involve pursuing Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren, who is still in active negotiations on a new contract extension. If he fails to come to an agreement and accepts the $9.6 million qualifying offer, he could become a free agent in 2027, when the Clippers will be inclined to meet his demands.
“The interesting thing about where Jalen Duren now sits is that there’s suddenly a very obvious 2027 free agency fit—the Clippers—that has obvious motivation to overpay if the Pistons can’t find a middle ground with him now,” wrote Sam Quinn of CBS Sports.
After helping the Pistons to the first seed in the East last season, Jalen Duren has been fighting to secure a $40+ million annual salary. The Pistons, however, have refused to concede to his demands, citing his underwhelming performance during the playoffs, when he averaged 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists over 14 games.
So far, neither side has budged in extension talks, and it’s looking increasingly likely that Duren will have to settle for a one-year qualifying offer worth $9.6 million. In that event, Duren would become a free agent in less than one year, putting control back in his hands regarding the next phase of his NBA career.
Besides the Clippers, it’s unclear what other teams might be in the mix for Duren, but they might be his best bet to secure a high-end contract in a semi-competitive situation. While Jalen would not solve everything for Los Angeles, they have an extra incentive to overpay for his services given that they don’t have their own picks for years to come.
In the aftermath of the NBA’s ruling, the Clippers have no reason to build around the draft. To stay somewhat relevant, they must be proactive in free agency and be willing to take some risks for the sake of winning now. With Darius Garland, Rui Hachimura, and Bradley Beal on the team, they still have a solid core in place, and adding a star like Duren could help make these next few years go by a little bit easier.
With averages of 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game last season, we know what Duren can do in the right situation. At 22, there’s reason to believe his best is yet to come, and the Clippers need someone like him to help them stay competitive in this dark era of franchise history. In turn, Duren can take advantage of the Clippers’ situation to get himself the bag and take up the mantle as hero of a struggling franchise. For now, that reality is still many months off, but the Clippers must start planning ahead to mitigate the damage.
