Red Sox Could Catch Yankees, but Health is More Important

Unless something drastic happens over the final month of Major League Baseball's regular season, the [Boston Red Sox](https://nesn.com/boston-red-sox) have to feel like they're in a pretty good spot.

The Red Sox are currently five games ahead in the American League Wild Card, though they haven't exactly played too well over their past 10 at 4-6.

At this point, unless the Red Sox have another major stretch in them, they likely aren't going to catch the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays are currently 8.5 games ahead of the Red Sox, and the Yankees sit five games ahead, which is really six games because they hold the tiebreaker over them.

It's never a good idea to mail in a season and not try to win games toward the back half of the year when teams think they're a lock to make the postseason when they actually aren't, but that's what one writer recently suggested.

“As such, Tracy’s club might just have to operate on cruise control over these next couple of weeks and prioritize health — rather than put their foot on the pedal in hopes of toppling New York.

“Such a reality was reinforced on Tuesday, considering that Boston opted to skip ace Sonny Gray’s spot in the rotation for this matchup against the Mariners,” Conor Ryan wrote.

It's not crazy to say that the Red Sox could take their foot off the gas a little bit in terms of playing guys who aren't healthy, or are at least banged up, but ultimately, Boston has dealt with so many injuries this year and is getting so many guys back that it probably has to play a lot of these guys just to help them get the feel back.
