Despite starting the season as Chelsea’s number one, Robert Sanchez now finds himself at Como.
Robert Sanchez made a series of costly mistakes against Fulham, which quickly raised fresh doubts over his spot. Sensing a chance to upgrade, Chelsea pounced to sign World Cup winner Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa, instantly installing him as the team’s new number one.
Meanwhile, young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders took his chance in the Carabao Cup, turning in a remarkably calm, composed performance against Luton Town to solidify his standing.
Squeezed between Martinez’s world-class credentials and Penders’ rapid rise, Sanchez tumbled down the pecking order to third choice and ended up joining Cesc Fabregas at Como on loan.

It remains to be seen as to whether Robert Sanchez will even claim the number one shirt for Como, as Jean Butez looks to have sealed the number one spot.
However, Fabregas does admit that the signing of Sanchez was never planned anyway.
He said: “We weren’t looking for a goalkeeper: the Robert Sanchez opportunity arose. We made an attempt, and he accepted immediately. Butez has been practically unchallenged for the last year and a half, without competition. He has performed incredibly well and has been fundamental for us.”
