Liverpool can further bolster their ranks in 2027 after failing to address all of their squad issues this summer

The summer transfer window may have barely closed, but Liverpool's attention will be quickly pivoting to January and beyond. The Merseyside club completed six signings this summer, including the arrival of £123million man Bradley Barcola.

Andoni Iraola will have anticipated a more hectic window with the Reds still lacking depth in midfield, defence and on the right flank.

Adam Wharton

Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for the 22-year-old but Crystal Palace have been fiercely reluctant to part with one of their most treasured assets. The defensive midfielder would represent an astute acquisition, strengthening what remains a particularly problematic position.

His contract runs until 2029 but Liverpool legend Phil Thompson remains firmly convinced. Speaking on BOYLE Sports and Footy Accumulators' podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football, he said: "Adam Wharton is a player that I would be interested in signing for Liverpool. I can't understand why nobody, in all this transfer merry-go-round, hasn't picked him up this summer."

Lamine Camara

Chelsea were left seething on deadline day after a £47.1m deal to bring Camara in from Monaco fell through. It was subsequently reported by talkSPORT that Liverpool instructed the player 'to wait' and that a move to sign him next summer remained a possibility.

Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro confirmed the star had requested to leave the club, but added that he had since spoken to Camara and reassured him that he would secure a major transfer 'very soon'.

Whether this paves the way for Liverpool to make a move in 2027 remains unclear. The tenacious midfielder is contracted until 2029, meaning he would still command a hefty fee.

Malo Gusto

Liverpool reportedly made a late attempt to sign Chelsea star Gusto on transfer deadline day. Journalist Fabrice Hawkins revealed that Liverpool had made contact regarding a potential loan arrangement.

The west London club are said to have instead "pushed" for a permanent deal, while Liverpool were equally unwilling to commit.

Gusto is tied down until 2030, but with the Reds desperately requiring right-back cover, the 23-year-old Frenchman could well remain a target come next summer.

Yankuba Minteh

Another player that slipped through Liverpool's fingers. The club saw two bids for the right winger, in the region of £50m and £60m, rejected by Brighton.

The 22-year-old Gambian has enormous potential. With Liverpool still lacking depth on the right, next summer could be the moment to test Brighton's determination once more, despite his deal running until 2029.

Ismaila Sarr

The Reds needed to strengthen in wide attacking positions following Mohamed Salah's exit. Interest in the Crystal Palace forward emerged after Iraola's side walked away from the pursuit of Minteh due to the Seagulls' steep demands.

Liverpool conducted checks on Sarr this summer. However, while reports of a £50m offer being turned down have been refuted, he could become obtainable next year with his deal at Selhurst Park running until 2029.

Aurelien Tchouameni

Liverpool have long held admiration for the Real Madrid midfielder, stretching back to when he was featuring for Monaco. He was strongly linked with a switch to Manchester United this year with his agreement in the Spanish capital expiring in the summer of 2028.

It might prove somewhat ambitious with Madrid undoubtedly determined to demand a substantial fee for the 26-year-old World Cup finalist. But the truth is that next summer could present the perfect conditions for Liverpool to pursue the world-class defensive midfielder.

Fikayo Tomori

A player with both Premier League and Champions League pedigree would suit Liverpool's backline as they look for additions with Virgil van Dijk's deal expiring in 2028.

A fruitful loan stint at Milan in 2021 resulted in Tomori's permanent signing and he's subsequently established himself as a crucial player for the club, claiming the Serie A crown in 2022 and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2025.

The Reds have been associated with a move for the former England international and there is the additional advantage that Tomori's contract is scheduled to run out next year. It's not a high-profile name but the ex-Chelsea man could prove a clever acquisition on a free transfer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Could it really happen? The truth is, Alexander-Arnold's stint at Real Madrid since departing Liverpool in the summer of 2025 has fallen well short of expectations.

His difficulties have mounted over the summer, with Denzel Dumfries arriving at the club to battle for the right-back position. New boss Jose Mourinho has also dropped the star for the opening two matches of this campaign, though he has since been handed a starting berth in a La Liga fixture against Malaga.

The Reds have felt the absence of their dynamic right-back, and he appears a pale imitation of the player he once was without them. He could command a substantial fee given his contract runs until 2031, but it could yet prove to be a transfer that suits all involved.
