Chelsea Women have named Erin Cuthbert as their new captain, with the long-serving midfielder taking over the armband following Millie Bright’s retirement.
Cuthbert has been with Chelsea since joining from Scotland as a teenager in December 2016 and has developed into one of the most important figures in the club’s modern history.
Chelsea officially confirmed Cuthbert’s appointment on Friday, with Sonia Bompastor backing the 28-year-old to lead the team into a new era.

Erin Cuthbert named Chelsea Women captain
Cuthbert takes the armband permanently after already captaining Chelsea on several occasions during Bright’s absence last season.
The midfielder has now made 301 appearances for the Blues, scoring 70 goals.
She has also been part of 18 of Chelsea Women’s 20 trophy wins, including seven WSL titles, five Women’s FA Cups and four Women’s League Cups.
Cuthbert described the appointment as a major honour and admitted she could never have imagined becoming Chelsea captain when she first moved south as an 18-year-old.
She said she understands the responsibility attached to the armband and is ready to step up.
Bompastor believes Cuthbert’s knowledge of the club makes her the ideal choice.
The Chelsea head coach praised her character, standards and ability to lead by example, describing the Scotland international as someone who understands what representing the club means.
Cuthbert leads Chelsea into new Stamford Bridge era
The timing of the appointment is significant.
Chelsea Women begin their WSL campaign against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with every league home match now being played at Stamford Bridge.
Cuthbert will therefore lead the side into one of the biggest structural changes in the women’s team’s history.
She has also written directly to supporters following the announcement, describing Chelsea as the club where she has grown up and stressing her desire to continue winning trophies.
Chelsea published Cuthbert’s open letter to fans, in which she spoke about her connection with supporters and her pride at leading the side into its new Stamford Bridge era.
Chelsea enter the new domestic campaign having already secured their place in Europe after beating Real Sociedad 1-0 to complete a 6-2 aggregate Champions League win.
Now Cuthbert will be the player leading Bompastor’s side through what could become another defining Chelsea season.
