Why Rio Ngumoha has not been included in Liverpool's 25-man Premier League squad list

Liverpool have announced their 25-man Premier League squad for the 2026-27 season, but some players were notably absent from the list

Rio Ngumoha will still be eligible to play for Liverpool this season despite not being named in the Premier League squad list that has been submitted this week for the 2026-27 campaign.

With the club seeing more players leave than arrive over the summer, head coach Andoni Iraola had a relatively straightforward task when it came to putting his list of players together. The squad was formally submitted to the Premier League on Thursday and will remain unchanged until the January transfer window opens, at which point Liverpool will be permitted to bring in new additions.

And, despite Ngumoha, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni being left off the list, all three players remain eligible to play for the club at any point this season. Under Premier League regulations, players who are under 21 do not count towards the 25-man limit, provided they were born on or after January 1, 2005.

The oldest of the three absentees, Jacquet, was born on July 13, 2005, and therefore qualifies for this exemption. Ngumoha and Leoni are both teenagers and similarly fall outside the scope of the 25-man squad rules.

Clubs are permitted to include a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players within their 25-man squad. Any additional places must be filled by players who qualify as homegrown.

To be classified as homegrown, a player must have been registered with a club in England or Wales for at least three full seasons, or 36 months, before turning 21. The same status also applies to those who reach their 21st birthday during the course of a season.

Jacquet and Ngumoha have each featured for the club this season already, while Leoni has been ruled out through injury alongside Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa.
