The 2026 offseason has seen the end of some noteworthy professional careers, with players like Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, and Kyle Lowry retiring from the sport. While these are big-ticket names, another one that deserves to be mentioned is former Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger.
At just 34, Jared Sullinger recently announced his retirement from professional basketball. Drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 21st overall pick in 2012, Sullinger played for the Celtics for four seasons before moving overseas to play in China’s CBA and professional leagues in South Korea (KBL) and Puerto Rico (BSN).
Although Sullinger’s time as a basketball player has come to an end, this is far from the end of his journey. While announcing his retirement, Jared Sullinger also revealed that he would be returning to his alma mater, Ohio State, as the Director of Player Development, a vital role in nurturing the next generation and their talent. Here is his official retirement statement:
“After a lifetime of giving everything I have to this game, it’s time for me to officially step away from playing basketball. What a journey it has been. From a kid with a dream in Columbus, Ohio, to wearing an Ohio State jersey, hearing my name called on NBA Draft night, representing the Boston Celtics, and having the honor of putting on jerseys for teams across the world – every city, province, country, community, teammate, coach, fan, and organization became a part of my story. I want to thank my family and friends who stood beside me through every high and low. Most importantly, thank you to my father, Satch, for laying the foundation and teaching me what this game and life is really about. To my beautiful mother: THANK YOU.”
Jared Sullinger continued by expressing his heartfelt gratitude for his family, his coaches at Ohio State, and the Boston Celtics for all their support. After showing his appreciation for those close to him, Sullinger added:
“Basketball has given me more than I could ever repay, but while one chapter ends, another one begins. I’m beyond grateful and proud to announce that I’ll be joining The Ohio State University staff — a dream of mine from the moment I knew coaching would be in my future. I get to come home, pour into the next generation, represent the Scarlet and Gray again, and give back to the place that gave so much to me. I’m hanging up the jersey, but I’m not walking away from the game. I’m just changing seats. Forever a Buckeye. Jared Sullinger.”
Jared Sullinger’s NBA career was intriguing, to say the least. In his rookie season (2012-13), Sullinger positioned himself as a solid interior presence. While coming off the bench, he averaged 6.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, along with 0.5 steals and 0.5 blocks.
By his sophomore year, the forward earned a larger role with the Celtics, starting 44 of 74 games. The rise in minutes also did wonders for his production, as he posted 13.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 0.5 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game.
Sullinger’s form continued into his third season, as his stats remained virtually the same (13.3 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 0.8 SPG, 0.7 BPG). Unfortunately, with only 58 appearances, concerns regarding his chronic foot injuries began to grow.
Needless to say, this had a major impact on his performance in the 2015-16 season, where his playing time was reduced. Although he appeared in 81 games, the forward’s impact dipped, as he posted only 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game.
Jared Sullinger’s injuries eventually needed more attention, as he was forced to undergo surgery in the 2016-17 season before making his debut for the Toronto Raptors. Thus, after just 11 appearances for Toronto, Sullinger’s time in the NBA came to an end.
Although this is unfortunate, Sullinger enjoyed great success overseas.
During his time in the CBA, the forward represented teams such as the Shenzhen Aviators (now known as the Leopards) and the Guangdong Southern Tigers during his second stint in China, even winning the International MVP Award in 2024. He also helped the KBL’s Anyang KGC lift the trophy in 2021.
Overall, Jared Sullinger’s professional career was an intriguing blend of highs and lows. Now, as the forward begins his next chapter, many will look forward to how effective he can be in his new role for Ohio State.
