Everton’s transfer business, or lack of it, will continue to dominate the headlines in the coming days and weeks.
The farcical end to the transfer window that left Everton with a squad short of options cannot be ignored. But it wasn’t like the Toffees didn’t try to do business.
But some of their business has ended up annoying Roma, especially if the latest comments on Roma Giallorossa are anything to go by.
Everton spent much of the summer exploring various options to fill the holes in their squad. It was just that they never got any of those deals over the line when they really needed to.
Roma in the way
Some of the summer business, and players they were interested in, saw them crossing paths with Roma. For those that don’t know, the two clubs are owned by the same group, the Friedkin Group.
These regular crossovers of transfer interests led to plenty of annoyance in Italy. That was particularly the case at the end of the window when Everton showed an interest in Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling.
He was also a target for Roma, who were close to getting a deal done late in the window. Everton then made a late move to potentially take him to Merseyside.
Ultimately the player decided against the move, as his manager has since explained. But the fact Everton tried to insert themselves into the deal has not gone down well at Roma.
Annoyance towards Everton
Indeed, they remain pretty annoyed about it and other efforts in the summer, as journalist Ugo Trani details.
“I also want to reiterate what I’ve already written: Everton has frequently stepped into negotiations Roma was interested in during recent transfer windows. It’s truly unbelievable,” he said during an appearance on Te la do io Tokyo’ on TeleRadioStereo 92.7.
It seems then just like the rest of us, they’re wondering what Everton were up to this summer. This comment is just one of many and frustration about the Toffees constantly stepping on Roma’s toes.
Roma frustration adds to a growing story and sense of incompetence at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer that ultimately culminated in the fiasco on deadline day.
