Everton manager David Moyes has been told he should consider his position following the club’s chaotic end to the transfer window.
Before anyone gets carried away, the suggestion comes from talkSPORT’s Alex Crook. This is not a report that Moyes is considering resigning. There is no suggestion from the manager himself that he wants to leave.
It is Crook’s opinion – and should be treated accordingly. There is, however, a reasonable question underneath the rather dramatic conclusion.
Did Everton give Moyes what he wanted?
Crook believes Moyes has been let down by Everton’s transfer business and should consider walking away rather than facing another difficult season.
Resignation feels an enormous leap from where things currently stand. Everton are unbeaten after two Premier League games, taking four points, and Moyes has given no public indication that his future is in doubt.
What we do know is that he repeatedly spoke about wanting to strengthen his squad before the deadline. Everton subsequently sold Beto and Iliman Ndiaye, failed to complete the £40m signing of Folarin Balogun and ended the window with Thierno Barry as their only recognised senior centre-forward.
The proposed sale of Harrison Armstrong was also abandoned late in the window, but only after a fan backlash.
There were arrivals. Jack Grealish returned, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles was among the late additions. So this isn’t evidence of an impending Moyes resignation.
It is a talkSPORT opinion – nothing more.
The more interesting question is whether Moyes looks at the squad he has been left with and believes Everton delivered the window he wanted. We all know the answer.
